The Cup Weekend

The Jackson Cup, named in honor of the late Past Commodore Dr. Robert F. Jackson, (1993-'94), is an annual invitational team race challenge by the Boston Yacht Club to other clubs and organizations. The teams selected for the challenge are chosen for having demonstrated high racing skill and the Corinthian spirit. The event was inaugurated in 1999 and is held in April each year. It is sailed in Sonar class boats.

This year was the 10th anniversary annual Jackson Cup Invitational Team Racing Regatta, raced on April 18 and 19 with dinner on Saturday evening and awards on Sunday afternoon. Eight teams of three raced with one or two round robins followed by final rounds to keep everyone racing over the two days. In 2009 we had 61 race starts, and in 2008 we managed 68 races.

2009 attracted top team racing talent, spanning three countries:

Boston Yacht Club, Marblehead, MA
Eastern Yacht Club, Marblehead, MA
Larchmont Yacht Club, Larchmont, NY
New York Yacht Club, Newport, RI
Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron, Halifax (Canada)
Royal Thames Yacht Club, London (UK)
Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club, Oyster Bay, NY
Southern Yacht Club, New Orleans, LA

Saturday’s racing saw a northerly wind with lots of shifts, 7-10 knots, and warm temperature of around 70F in Marblehead Harbor. Sunday’s racing started off with gusts to 23 knots and chop in the harbor, races were postponed until the wind blew a constant 10-12 knots from the north.

The racing: we can easily say this was the best Jackson Cup team racing since inception. The competition was fierce, traps laid, traps avoided, competitive strategies, and finishes called by inches to determine winners. The level of competition and strategies were in full swing from the first flight of race 1 all the way through the finals in the medal rounds. We raced a full round robin on Saturday (28 races), started the second round robin which continued into Sunday (completed 26 of 28 races), then the medal rounds.

The medal rounds: top four teams reached the medal rounds with Seawanhaka Corinthian YC leading in points so they chose to race against the Boston YC in the semi-final round. New York YC and Royal Thames YC raced for the final spot. The final round was a best of three races with Seawanhaka Corinthian YC vs New York YC (defending champions), Seawanhaka Corinthian easily took the first race, in the second race New York YC had a 1-2 approaching the leeward mark and Seawanhaka Corinthian YC came from behind to win The Jackson Cup 2:0 in the final.

Tributes from 2009 Participants:

From the Royal Thames Yacht Club - Thomas Brennan, Sailing Director:
I wanted to congratulate you and Boston Yacht Club for hosting such a great regatta. All from Royal Thames had a great time and look forward to challenging again for the Jackson Cup in 2010. Can you please say thank you to all at BYC for making us feel so welcome.

From Tripp Alyn - Chief Umpire:

Thanks again for your warm hospitality, and for taking care of the umpire staff. It was a great international event.....one which you can be very proud of. I'm hoping to hear news that the boat damage is minimal this year. When I receive the complete feedback from the umpires I will forward it to you to aid you in your after-action report and your planning for next year. This was my 9th Jackson Cup and I have to say that, in many ways, it was truly one of the very best. Congratulations and Bravo Zulu!

From the Seawanhaka Yacht Club – Andy Herlihy, Team Captain:

On behalf of Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club I wanted to thank Boston Yacht Club for another great Jackson Cup. The entire BYC staff and volunteers really make this event special! On and off the water, the Jackson is one of the best!

From the New York Yacht Club – Beth Duggan, Racing Coordinator:
